I was trying to sleep this morning but a fly kept running into me and buzzing in my ear. I had to get up 2 hours earlier than i normally would because i couldnt catch the damn thing! It was the most annoying thing ever! Why wouldnt this stupid thing ...

Profound is more severe than severe. Both a person with a profound or severe hearing loss is deaf. And person with any degree of hearing loss - even mild - is deaf. But ...

I'm writing a book in which a character needs to have instant, complete hearing loss which does not go away on its own, but remains until treated.
Preferably caused by trauma or infection, but it needs to to happen very quickly and be reversible.
Anyone have any ideas?

Just wait a while. There isn't anything you can do. If the ringing doesn't stop or you are afraid of hearing loss, see a doctor.
